On the Southeast side of Indianapolis, you will find Fountain Square. An old neighborhood, that is full of character and has a variety of charms. Those charms haven’t always been though. When I was a kid, the area was a veritable slum. The shops were mostly empty and the only things of note were the Duckpin Bowling Alley, a lunch counter with good pie, and the dental clinic across the street that served those pie eaters. Heck, there wasn’t even a fountain in Fountain Square at the time.
But then the artists got priced out of Broad Ripple… always the heroes of early gentrification, they gave life to Fountain Square. The good news is, even though we are late in the gentrification process of the area, the arts are still holding on and this is one of the most vibrant art communities in Indy. Lets hope it stays that way.
