The Picket Lines of 2026, So Far
I meant to keep this short. Just a roll call, a nod to the brothers and sisters standing out in the cold or the heat because an owner would rather let the place go dark than sit down and do right. That little bit of spoken solidarity is the least we owe them.
Then we pulled the list. It’s long.
So we went the other way. If the list is long, the roll call is long. Below is each strike action we could find that a local has had to take so far this year. Some of these fights touch our shop. Plenty of them don’t, and that doesn’t change a thing. A working person’s fight anywhere is my fight. Solidarity counts heaviest when you’re broke, the family needs everything, and you can’t work because the company would rather shut down than give you the dignity owed to any person.
Here’s how to read it. A single date was a one-day walkout. A range shows how long the line held. An open dash means we had no settlement on record when we went to press. Some of those folks are still out there, and some may have settled before the trackers caught up. Where the record didn’t name a union, we name the workers. A few of these lines formed last year and carried into this one. They count. A picket line doesn’t reset on New Year’s Day.
That makes 581 actions in 24 countries, January through the first week of November.
Fall in. When I call your name, you don’t have to answer. We know you’re there.

That’s the roll.
If we missed you, I’m sorry. Tell us, and we’ll call your name out loud next time.
Now, if you want to do something for labor that goes past reading names, look at the open dashes that go back to winter and spring. Those are the long-haul crews. Teamsters Local 631 at Quikrete has been out since the first week of January. The Mantoverde copper miners in Chile went out on January 2. The CUPE locals at the Nova Scotia nursing homes walked on April 13. The Birmingham bin workers have been on the line since March of last year. A one-day walkout costs a family a day’s pay. A line held through three seasons costs them the car payment, the rent, and a good share of the grocery money.
Find their strike funds and put something in. Before you send money, call the hall or check the local’s page. Make sure they’re still out and that the money goes where they say it should. Measure twice, give once.
My old man carried other folks’ baggage for a living, and he told me the job came with a rule: you carry the load and you keep your dignity. These folks on the list are doing that right now, out in the weather, on behalf of the rest of us. The least we can do is know their names.
Oh, and if you don’t mind…let those companies know how you feel about them mistreating our family.
Respect is the first safety rule. Now you know, Jack.
